Hapag-Lloyd has officially announced the urgent suspension of two routes effective May 10 — namely JD2 and JD3 — both involving the Red Sea region. The reasons need not be elaborated. The suspensions will directly impact cargo shipments to key Middle Eastern ports such as Jeddah and Aqaba.
It is worth noting that JD2 and JD3 are important feeder routes connecting Asia-Europe with the Red Sea coast. JD2 called at Tangier, East Port Said, and Jeddah, while JD3 covered East Port Said, Aqaba, and Jeddah. Together, they handled a significant volume of cargo transshipment destined for the Middle East.

Following the suspension of these routes, the original capacity will be consolidated into alternative services such as JD1 and SE4. However, there is considerable concern that the capacity and transshipment efficiency of the replacement routes cannot fully match that of the original two. This will likely result in noticeably slower feeder connections at ports like Jeddah and Aqaba, extending cargo transit times. Cargo that originally moved on these two routes may face queuing for space on alternative services, requiring adjustments to logistics plans, timelines, and costs.
This is not the first time Hapag-Lloyd has adjusted its Middle East services. As tensions continue to escalate, merchant shipping remains fraught with risk. When booking space in the coming period, customers are strongly advised to pay close attention to voyage arrangements involving the Middle East, prioritize checking whether cargo is destined for affected ports such as Jeddah and Aqaba, communicate proactively with carriers and clients, and adjust booking plans in a timely manner to avoid cargo delays and additional demurrage and storage charges caused by route changes.
